Hold fast to dreams!
If I can’t fly, then I shall just die.
Langston Hughes was an famous African American poet during the Harlem Renaissance. His most famous work was “The Negro speaks of Rivers.”
The tone of "Dreams" was very anxious and a bit depressed because the speaker is trying to tell you not to give up on a dream or your life is going to be depressed. I think the reason that it sounds anxious to me is because of the metaphors he uses to enchance the meaning of the poem. For example, "...For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That can not fly." It makes it sound like if you give up on your dreams, your life is not worth living.
Dang, it cold!
The poem ”Dreams” by Langston Hughes uses some strong word choices. For example, “broken-winged bird” and “barren field.” These words has some pretty deep meaning to them. They describe what life would be like without dreams. The word choice also affects the tone of the poem.
I’m not giving up yet!
The imageries in the poem “Dreams” are all sight. Langston Hughes uses imageries for his metaphors. Although the imagery is sight, it make you feel the emotion of the image that come up in your head. For example, “broken-winged bird that can not fly,” you can see a bird with a broken wing but you also feel helpless, hpjust like the bird. This shows how powerful Langston Hughes’s imagery can be. It is so powerful and deep that you don’t just see it, but also feel it.
The style of “Dreams” is a lot of metaphors. Langston Hughes’ metaphors are extremely powerful and deep. The comparison of two thing and make you feel all kinds of emotions. For example, “For if dreams go, Life is a Barron field frozen with snow.” You suddenly start to feel cold and lonely (just kidding, but his metaphors are amazing.)
The theme of “Dreams” is to never give up or you will just feel worsts. I think that is the theme because the whole poem is telling you to hold on to dream or your life is going to be miserable. For example, “Hold fast to dreams, For if dreams die, Life is a broken-winged bird, That can not fly.” This just means that if you give up on dreams, your life is meaningless, just like a bird that cannot fly.
