  • Spain got Florida in the late 1500s. By the 1800s, Florida had a population of Seminole Indians, Spanish colonists, English traders, and runaway slaves.

  • In 1804, Thomas Jefferson sent two diplomats to Spain to buy Florida, but they said no. Many Americans wanted to take over Florida and many Slave Owners in Georgia were angry because their slave would sometimes run way to Florida. Some were welcome by the Seminole Indians.

  • In April of 1818, President James Monroe sent out Andrew Jackson to Georgia to make an offer to stop the raids
  • Despite Monroe's orders, Andrew Jackson marched into Florida with 1,700 men behind him. Over a few weeks, he captured Spanish military posts and arrested, tried, and executed two British subjects for stirring up Indian attacks. Spain told the US to get Andrew out and try him for the crimes commited.
  • The US didn't want a war with Spain so John Quincy Adams convince President James Monroe to send a blunt message to the Spanish people in Florida.
  • Spain didn't want a war with the US either so they decided to get out.
