The head of the Clutter family is Herb, 48 years old and owns the ranch. He is hardworking, a fair father, and well known around the community. Bonnie Clutter is the wife of Herb, a mother, and has severe depression. She is always in her room, as she is embarrassed of her current state. Nancy, daughter of Herb and Bonnie, can be describes as the" town darling" as she is smart, beautiful, and involved. Kenyon, son of Herb and Bonnie, is lonely, intelligent, and in to technology. Dick, one of the two murderers, plays the role of a true outlaw, as he is greedy, works hard on planning schemes, and is violent. It was his plan to go to the Clutter ranch. Perry Smith, the other of the two, is the more complex and developed character who had a dark and confusing childhood. Finally, there is Al Dewey, the head of the Clutter murder investigation who is a special agent of the FBI that becomes obsessesd with the murder case.
The setting of "In Cold Blood" takes place in Holcomb,Kansas, which is a Western city. According to Capote, it is not really a lively city, and it has an extremely small population of nearly 300 people. The town was once peaceful and lived in harmony until the murder of the Clutters, which caused the residents to mistrust each other and disturbed the peace of the residents.
The major conflict of the novel is when the murders are discovered and Al Dewey vows to find out who did it. This causes Dewey's life to get torn apart in some sense, as he puts all his time into the case and has no time for his family. His wife even starts worry about him, all of this happening while Dick and Perry are on the run.
The climax/most important event in the book is when Dick and Perry get caught and are arrested in Las Vegas. The police find the binoculars and a radio they stole from the Clutters. This leads to them confessing they did the murder, which leads to the falling action where they are put on trial.
A theme of "In Cold Blood" can be the American dream and how since the Clutter's were basically the definition of the American dream at the time of the novel, it was what inspired Dick and Perry to attempt to rob them, which got the Clutter's killed instead. The death of the Clutters was basically the end of the "American Dream" for the city of Holcomb since the deaths caused mistrust amongst all in the city
