Banaue Rice Terraces
Spanish travelers recorded that the Filipinos had carved their gods and ancestors on wood, and they also had all sorts of instruments that they play for various seasonal celebrations and life rituals. The traditions have begun to die out, and there are a couple efforts to bring them back. Many Filipino artists influenced western culture over the years, and are famous in all aspects of the arts.
The Department of Education ensures a basic education to all citizens. School lasts from age 5 to age 18, and the Bureau of Alternative Learning System gives opportunities to attain basic education out of the formal school system. There are dozens of universities and colleges, the oldest is the University of Santo Tomas which was founded in 1611.
The Philippines have a mass amount of unique geography and land forms. They consist of the archipelago, the long coastline, the mountainous country, the various coastal plains, the river systems, and the lakes. The islands are mostly made of volcanic rock and coral. The most prominent mountain range in the country is the Cordilla Central, which runs north to the Luzon Strait. The hilly and mountainous land consists of fertile soils that support fruit trees and pineapples. Many other crops are grown in the country.
