Storyboard Text

  • 31st January 1968 was the Tet Festival of celebrating New Year.Without warning the Viet Cong and NVA (North Vietnamese Army) launched attacks in the South.
  • Cities & US military bases were targeted. The Viet Cong hoped the South would support them & overthrow the Government & kick out the US.
  • Over 100 locations were attacked, Saigon (capital) being the most important one. The US embassy & several radio stations were captured.
  • However, within 48 hours the US and ARVN (South Vietnamese army) had taken back control. The people of the south did not support the Communists (Viet Cong) and the Communists suffered heavy loses.
  • The US military saw this as a victory. 30,000 Viet Cong were dead.
  • However, the view of the US public was different. They saw the attack unfold on TV and were shocked. The US public read papers that reported that thousands had been killed. They wondered how this could have happened? They then realised this war could not be won.
