In 1840 on the 6th of February, Hone Heke was the first to sign the treaty between the Maori and the British Crown. The document had been taken around New Zealand for more Chief's to sign.
In 1859 the Te Atiawa minor Chief offered to sell some land at Waitara north of Taranaki to the British Crown. The government had accepted but the Senior Chief, Wiremu Kingi denied. A war broke out in 1860 and Taranaki experienced conflict for 21 more years.
The British army attacked Gate Pa in attempt to dislodge Maori. Thirty one British people died with eighty wounded. Twenty Maori also died at Gate Pa.
