Central idea: is that when something bad happens to you it can blind you from who you really are, and change your moral values .
When elie doesn't feel about the man being hanged it shows his character has changed while in the camp .
I don't feel bad for him at all
this man is to be hanged for treason against the FUTHER
dying is no longer a fear of mine
when the factory is going to be bombed elie no longer has a fear of death that death would be better than spending another day in the camp suffering .
this factory is going to be bombed on .
When his father is being beaten with the stick elie does nothing because before the camp he would have killed the man who hurt his father but in the camp he is helpless and can do nothing
i stood there silently and did nothing
"Dumb old man march" the kapo says while hitting him with medal stick
When elie has to give the man his good filling because he would hurt his father it shows that elie has become defenseless he has given up on fighting .
I have to give it to him or father will suffer
I knew you would give me the filling I always win
How these four scenes show the central idea is that over the course of the chapter elie changes he doesn't feel remorse for the dentist being hanged, he is not afraid of the factory being bombed because death would better than living in the camp and he doesn't do anything when his father is being beaten and he gives up and gives the man his filling . Because of being in the camp it has changed the way he acts and the moral values he had before getting to the camp. He becomes a helpless person while in the camp and no longer fights for the things he believes in anymore.
