This day, July 1st 1863, was the 12th bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The Union won the first day because they got Cemetery Ridge and The confederates could not stop them because it is hard to fight uphill.
General Lee knew that the key to victory was to get to a hill called Little Round Top because he would have a height advantage over the Union but the Union got their first.

On July 3, General Lee decided to launch an attack on General Meade and his troops known as Pickett's Charge The Confederates had over double the troops but still the Union pushed through killing 6,000+ men and defeating the confederates in the last major battle.

As the battle ended Abe Lincoln was proud of the Union and General Lee was sad after a hard fought battle with around 50,000 casualty's total. This battle turned the tables for the Union and victory was in sight.

On November 19th, 1863, Lincoln created a speech and shared it at the National cemetery to show his respect to those who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg and talked about the purpose of a soldiers sacrifice and is to this day a very famous speech.
