Brown's Small Force
Oh no, townspeople and militia are here! Where are the local slaves???
John Brown thought of a plan to end slavery in the South. In 1859, Brown began planning his abolitionist revolution.
John Brown gathered a small force. It consisted of 16 white men, 3 free black men, 1 freed slave and 1 fugitive slave.
The first part of the raid was successful. Brown was local slaves to come help but they never did. Browns men were surrounded by townspeople and militia. A few of his men were killed and they moved to John Brown's fort.
Two days after the raid, Colonel Robert E Lee arrived with his marines. He offered Brown the chance to surrender but Brown refused. After he refused, they attacked. Many of Brown's men died but brown was taken prisoner.
John Brown and a few of his men were convicted of treason and they were hung on December 2 1859
Brown became a known abolitionist and his story became famous. The Civil War would happen a year later.
