Lorina: Are there any current programs on campus for students with disabilities (i.e. ADD/ADHD, autism)?
Ms. Boik: Yes! I am the Program Coordinator for the College Support Program for Autism Students; active since 2011. Of course, there is always a need for more!
Volunteers and funding will be the biggest obstacles. Finding students who are truly committed! It is important to establish policies/procedures, training, safety guidelines, complete background checks, and a faculty liaison.
What steps/guidelines should be taken to start a "Buddy (Mentor) System" for students with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and Autism on campus?
Acceptance; from peers and of themselves. Often the student is resistant or unwilling to accept help because they want to blend in. Be "normal." They want there peers to see them as equals, as capable human beings.
