The North West Mounted Police were founded in 1873. US calvary wore blue uniforms to distinguish NWMP officers in canada from their american counterparts, the force wore bright red uniforms.
In 1874 hundreds of NWMP left fort dufferin, manitoba and headed west. The North West Mounted Police was modelled after the royal irish constabulary. John. A. Macdonald initially called it the north west mounted rifles, but changed it after to North West Mounted Police to avoid suspicions from the Americans
One of the first things that the NWMP officers had to do was to control the illegal whisky trade. All the liquor consumption led to increased violence. The whisky trade was harmful for the first nations.
