  • The theme is this scene is you've got all that you need as long as you have family. The Cratchits are a poor family, Bob only makes 5 shillings a week. Their house isn't very extraordinary, and Tiny Tim is handicapped but they are spending the holidays together and are happy.
  • Symbolism
  • "I wear the chain I forged in life."
  • The indirect characterization of Scrooge in this scene is that no one tries to make conversation with him or wish him happy holidays which characterizes him as lonely. Scrooge has a cold personality, which makes him unapproachable and unwelcoming in everyone else's eyes.
  • Theme
  • "I have seen your nobler aspirations fall off one by one, until the master passion, Gain, engrosses you. Have I not?"
  • Scrooge's internal conflict in this scene is that the Ghost of Christmas Future is frightening and dark. Scrooge will have to endure being in it's presence for the duration of his experience. He knows that this will help him, so he'd have to face his fears.
  • Indirect Characterization
  • "Why did you get married?"
  • Marley's Chains symbolize his greediness and selfishness of his past self. He said that he'd been punished in his afterlife, his chains were created during his lifetime. This shows that there is a price to pay for their bitterness towards others, how this will haunt Scrooge in his future.
  • The theme in this scene is the importance of devotion. Scrooge is always all about his wealth, Belle's upset about how his priorities have changed, how he has put her second after money and gain. Scrooge claims that he's only been growing wiser, that his devotion towards her has not changed, but she feels differently. His lack of devotion is what causes her to release him.
  • "What then? Even if I have grown so much wiser, what then? I am not changed toward you."
  • The indirect characterization of Scrooge is that he's uncompassionate. He doesn't understand the importance of love. When he's told by his nephew about his feeling of affection, Scrooge rejects his nephew's feelings as they are ridiculous to in his mind. He shows no happiness for his nephew about his newfound love.
