  • It's an honor to meet you Mr. President.
  • It is an honor to see you doing such work, Mr. Clerc.
  • Gallaudet was the principal and Clerc was the head teacher for the Connecticut Asylum at Hartford for the Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons in April of 1817.
  • Connecticut Legislature
  • I need to get money for my school. The children need a safe and prospering place to learn and be taught.
  • I will see what I can do.
  • Alice Cogswell was the first student to enroll at this school. She was deaf.

  • It is my pleasure to help such an amazing school.
  • In January of 1818, Clerc got support from Congress in Washington D.C. He was applauded for his work by President Monroe.
  • The School Prospers
  • YAY! WE DID IT!
  • On May 28, 1818, Clerc was the first deaf person to address the Connecticut Legislature. He seeked to bring opportunities for the school.
  • In 1819-1820, the congressmen granted the school with 23,000 acres of government land in Alabama. The land was sold for about $300,000. The school now had a start.
  • The school used these proceeds to construct school buildings at the Asylum and start an endowment which helped create income.
