  • See- I’m trying to talk to you ‘bout myself-and all you can say is eat them eggs and go to work.
  • Honey, you never say nothing new. I listen to you every day, every night and every morning, and you never say nothing.
  • Mind your own business.
  • It is my business- where is he going to live, on the roof?
  • Yeah- I always wanted to live in a house.
  • She went out and bought you a house! You glad about the house? It’s going to be yours when you get to be a man.
  • Walter and Ruth argue about a dream that Walter had. Walter talks about this dream to Ruth to give her a depth of understanding about the subject of pursuing his dream. Ruth is not interested in Walter’s dream and does not care whatsoever. Walter says, “See- I’m trying to talk you ‘bout myself - and all you can say is eat them eggs and go to work (34, Hansberry).
  • You trust me like that, Mama?
  • I’m telling you to be the head of this family from now on like you supposed to be.
  • Beneatha had found out she was having a baby. The family was awestruck hearing about the new addition of the family. Beneatha says, “ It is my business- where is he going to live, on the roof?”(58,Hansberry). To have a new family member it means to have a new life to take care of and be responsible for.
  • Son-Son... Is it gone? Son, I gave you sixty-five hundred dollars. Is it gone? All of it? Beneatha’s money too?
  • Yesss! All of it... It’s all gone...
  • Mama went out and bought her family a house that can provide new ideas, opportunities, and support for the Younger family. There is no place like home! Mama says, “ She went out and she bought you a house! You glad about the house? It’s going to be your house when you get to be a man(91, Hansberry).
  • Mama is very generous and gives Walter $3,500 to spend to make his dream come true. Mama tells Walter that it’s his time to step up and be the head of the family. Mama says, “ I’m telling you to be the head of this family from now on like your supposed to be(106, Hansberry). Walter is in charge of making his family the best they can possibly be.
  • Walter had a business transaction with Willie and BoBo that did not turn out so well. Walter put all his money into the hands of Willie and BoBo and Willie had the money with him and run off nowhere to be found. All the money that they had is all gone. Walter says, “Yesss! All of it ... It’s all gone...(129, Hansberry).
