  • On this day in 1862 , Union forces under General Samuel R. Curtis clash with the army of General  Earl Van  Dorn at the Battle of Pea Ridge ,also called the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern , in northwest Arkansas .

  • For the Union , Samuel R. Curtis and for the Confederate Earl Van Dorn . 
  • Where 
  • On March 7, McCulloch slammed into the rear of the Union force, but Curtis anticipated the move and turned his men towards the attack. McCulloch was killed during the battle , and  the Confederate attack  withered .

  • Through the Federals  had been badly beaten during the fighting on March 7 , they still held a strong position south of Elkhorn Tavern .
