  • My time has come, I supposed I should resign.
  • I, Pope Martin V, will promise to unify the church.
  • 3. Salvation can be gained only through faith in Christ
  • A split, known as the Great Schism, happened when Pope Clement V moved the center of from Rome to Avignon. This made people think that French had too much power.
  • In 1414, a conference was summoned in Germany to end the schism, and they met from 1414 to 1418.The Church was unified once again with a new pope named Pope Martin V. after Church officials persuaded the Roman pope to resign, and had the French pope removed.
  • In the 16th century, many people disliked how they had to taxes to the church, and how they did ot pay taxes on their landholdings. This led to a movement known as the Reformation started by a man named Martin Luther. Luther had many conflicts with the Catholic Church and wrote out his disputes with the church in his Ninety-Five Theses
  • Catholicism is the true religion to get closer to God.

  • Printing in this time became an effecctive method of spreading Luther's ideas. It was cheaper and was able to produce papers in different languags so other people can read it.
  • In the mid 1500's, battles were fought in Europe over religion. Charles V, a Holy Roman Emperor and a king of many countries, made Luther an outlaw and agreed to make a peace treaty with many Lutheran princes, the people they went to war against. They met in 1555 and had their peace treaty called the Peace of Augsburg.
  • In the early 1530's, a new important religious order takes place known as the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, formed by the Ignatius of Loyola. The Jesuits were more of a military unit that religious, and learned obedience and discipline. They mainly helped spread Catholicism across many countries, which means they played a role in supporting the Counter Reformation,
