  • He quickly gained the support of the Anglo colonists in Texas by promising to allow all states, including the Anglo colonies of Texas, to have states’ rights as was guaranteed in the Mexican Constitution of 1824  took away all states’ rights. He then made himself the Dictator of Mexico, which meant that all people of Mexico were under his complete control.
  • Already famous for his political success in Tennessee, as well as his heroics as a soldier in The War of 1812, Houston was greatly welcomed by the Anglo colonists in Texas. Though Stephen F. Austin feared that Houston had come to start a war with Mexico and make Texas a part of the United States, Houston claimed he did not come with any such intention. He did, however, quickly become involved in the politics of the Texas colonies.
  • . He hoped that in return, Santa Anna might reverse the Law of April 6th and reestablish use of the 1824 Constitution that once made Anglos so happy to live in Texas. Austin was wrong. Instead of granting him the requests he asked for, the Mexican government believed Austin was a traitor and Santa Anna ordered that he be placed in prison for acts of treason. Austin spent an entire year behind bars. He could see that his colonists would not be free to govern Texas without a fight. His attitude changed toward Mexico and he began urging Texan colonists to fight a revolution to make Texas an independent nation.
  • I don't understand.... what did I ever do to Him?! I can't stand that guy.
