Christopher Columbus was born in Italy but when he married he moved to Spain. He believed the world was round and he wanted to discover new lands. He needed to fund his journey so he asked many kings and queens who said no.
Finally Queen Isabella of Spain said yes she would fund the journey to find new lands in return she wanted new lands to be Spanish lands. She also offered a reward for the first man to spot the new land.
So Christopher got ready to set sail on August 3rd 1492. Things went well at first but by October 10th the crew were worried they would never get home and turn back, Christopher asked for 2/3 days and got lucky!
Three ships set sail they were the Pinta, Nina and Santa Marie. On October 12th a man on the Pinta cried Land! Land!
Columbus went ashore and named the island San Salvador which means Holy Saviour. He spent the next 3 months sailing around the nearby islands, looking for gold.
