Before the war, Johannes lived with Mutti, Vati, Lotti and Maus. He remembered good things about his childhood like the smell of gingerbread at Christmas.
His happy childhood ended when Johannes was taken to a concentration camp and separated from his parents. He was brave and concentrated on surviving.
He was reunited with Mutti in the camp hospital but he was clever enough to escape before he was killed by the Nazi's when the war was ending.
He was lucky to have the help of others. He was saved by Helga and Hannes who were with their 'mother' Frau Schmidt. But he also had to see a lot of death and destruction. Hannes was shot on their way to a displaced persons camp.
Johannes was lucky to be reunited with both his parents. While he was in the camp for displaced persons he had to realise they could not go home and they would have to start a new life as refugees.
When the family moved to Australia Johannes had to learn to stop hating Hitler and the Nazi's. This was stopping him with getting on with life and moving forward.
