With the Industrial Revolution, beginning in the late 1700s, there was a transition to an industrial urban economy. This meant that most people now moved from rural into urban areas where they took up work in factories.
The first companies appear at this time, such as ‘Colgate Palmolive’ which was established by an English immigrant to America who set up a soap, starch and candle factory in 1806.
In factories , products were now made in high quantities, called “mass production”, by people with the assistance of machines powered by steam or coal-power.
The Industrial Revolution that had began in great britain quickly spread throughout the world.
