  • Buses and trains should be desegregated
  • In 1960 the Supreme Court ruled that buses and trains should be desegregated.
  • In 1961 the South Carolina CORE field secretary, Tom Gaither, proposed more rides in order to test the effect the Supreme Court ruling had.
  • The CORE director, James Farmer, led the first ride. The first ride started in Washington DC and was destined to New Orleans.
  • The bus was intercepted when they reached Anniston, Alabama and a group of Klansman punched their tires and hold the doors while they bombed the bus.
