  • When the slaves were freed following the Civil War, I worked on the small farm that my father rented from his former owner.
  • In 1872 I went to work for the Gallinger Ranch in Arizona, where I remained for many years.
  • I married in 1889, and a year later I left the range to work as a Pullman porter on the Denver Rio Grande Railroad.
  • In 1907 he published his autobiography, which contains photographs of him wearing his western gear
  • After his father's sudden death, he became the sole support of his mother and younger brother and sister.
  • I died in Los Angeles in 1921.
