Women began fighting for their rights in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention in New York. Then, 42 years later the National American Women Suffrage Association. 20 years later only four states had given women the right to vote. Alice Paul pressured the federal government and was arrested for it. Virginia Young of South Carolina formed the Equal Rights Association and other groups banded together to create the South Carolina Equal Suffrage League. Then the US government finally gave women the right to vote with the 19th amendment. Unfortunately many people did not agree with this amendment but it was ratified by 36 states so it became a law.
Tourism and Recreation
Boll Weevils wreaked havoc on the cotton farms of poor farmers during the agricultural depression. This was a beetle like insect that would eat the fiber of the cotton bolls and some years it wiped out half of the cotton crops. This insect helped lead to farmers only producing 1/3 of their original crop and this also made many poor farmers leave South Carolina.
The US was at the begging of an economic boom know as the roaring twenties today and during this boom there was many new inventions. Many of the inventions were inspired because of electricity. Electricity powered peoples ideas to expand beyond what they normally though possible. They created things such as cars, toaster, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner, washing machine,telephones and radios. Credit was invented and allowed people to spend more money on luxury items.
Southren Literary Renissance
Now that there were new roads and highways connecting many states together, tourism grew and helped cities grow. Walterboro grew because of tourism because Walterboro was a halfway stop in between New York and Miami. South Carolina was a common tourist spot because of its interesting history and nice weather. many hotels were built to accommodate the 1,000s of tourists.
Even though the KKK was decreasing in popularity following reconstruction, it became more popular in the 1920s. Many Americans were mad that America was changing and did not like all of the new people or ideas coming from other countries so they supported the KKK. The KKK grew in popularity with the movie , The Birth of a Nation. This movie made the KKK seem good and as the savior of the whites. As the population of the Klan increased, there was more violence and hatred and more people died as a result.
The Southern Literary Renaissance was a time when writers and artists criticized the south and how it was a unsophisticated cultural wasteland. This bashing came from both the north and the south but it led to a revival that celebrated the south's unique culture and heritage. This was led by a group called the Poetry Society of South Carolina and the authors sought to make African Americans look better and to cast a favorable light on the south. The main group of authors that improved the view of Sc was known as the Southern Agrarians.
