  • The modernization, or the bringing up to date, of Russia wasn’t a quick process.
  • As the huge country began to nation build, it realized that it had a long road ahead of itself.
  • Before it began building railroads and factories, the country consisted of many different types of people and languages, most of whom lived on the land and partook in serfdom, or slavery.
  • This was a problem to Russian leaders, because it posed a big challenge that could prevent unification and centralization within the country.
  • Also, when Christians within a big enemy country called the Ottoman Empire fought for the Church, Russia wanted to protect them, so it took part in a battle against the Ottomans.
  • Eventually, looking to prevent Russian expansion, two other countries named Britain and France declared war on Russia.
