Hello, My name is Dorothea Dix and i will be your teacher today.
We will be praying today.
LET ME OUT PLEASE. I'M ONLY ONE DOLLAR IN DEBT.
Dorothea Dix agreed to teach Sunday school at a jail in 1841. She was very horrified that to see many prisoners in jail.
So Dix devoted herself to find questions and answers.
I'm going to the Massachusetts state legislature and I'm going to do something.
Dix visited many prisons and jails for people who owed money. Dix found that most of the people who where on the jail only owe less than $20 dollars.
in debt get out of jail and pay it off.
YES, I finial payed off my one dollar debt because Dorothea Dix help people who where
What almost made Dix really mad is that they put the mentally ill in prison. The prisons for the mentally ill where crowed and if the misbehaved they where whipped. Also Massachusetts only had one private asylum back then that cost a lot of money.
Dix continued to visit prison and campaign for the rest of her life. But by the time she died in 1887, state government no longer put debtors in jail. Also most states created a judicial system for children who did a crime.
Dorothea Dix help people who where in debt get out of it. Also Dorothea Dix helped prisons stop harsh punishments. An example of a harsh punishment that jails stop where branding people with hot irons.
