Storyboard Text

  • Will it be me?
  • The drawing/lottery in “The Lottery” is symbolic of chances in life.
  • The character's name Mr. Graves in “The Lottery” are symbolic of tombstones and death.
  • The character's name Mr. Summers in “The Lottery” is symbolic of a contradiction the reader’s expectation of summer.
  • The idea of a lottery puts readers with the idea of chance. You can either win or lose, but in this case there is a deadly consequence for losing. Another terrible thing about this specific lottery is that you are forced to enter it. Some people in it are just a little bit more lucky than others. For them that means life, as long as their luck will allow it.
  • The character’s name Mrs. Delacroix in “The Lottery” is symbolic of the hypocritical practice of this Christian.
  • Mr.Graves is a name that lead people to think he is a scary man they would automatically associate him with death. This is a good assumption for what he does. He is the man who made the slips of paper, who held them, and who sealed the fate of one family when Tessie was chosen. He is a man who must not see anything wrong with what is happening. This can be seen when he shows no emotion during the selection of one family where women and children can die.
  • When the reader hears the name Mr. Summers they are filled with pleasant thoughts, a positive connotation, and a picture of a nice man. The rest of the town also sees him in this light since he is an energetic and productive member of the community. But when the the lottery comes around he is leader of death. For one time out of the year he is not who the town and readers all think him to be, he is a man who wants to see death and pain. This is the opposite of the type of guy he was previously thought to be.
  • The name Delacroix means “of the cross” and people who are aware of this would be lead to believe that she is very religious. Throughout the story it is clear she is not liked by the rest of the community but it is not until the Tessie is selected that Mrs. Delacroix’s true nature is revealed. She is very eager and some would say blood thirsty to kill Tessie. She wanted to inflict the most damage and hopefully the killing blow. This does not line up with the true meaning of her name.
