Look Reuven i'm deeply sorry i injured you, but you could've ducked...
Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders grow up in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. They live less than a mile away and they have yet to meet. The story takes place during the 1940's and during World War II.
Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders first meet in a heated ball game against each other. What initially begins as a game becomes a war after Danny Saunders strikes a ball and sends it flying to Reuven's face. Reuven becomes injured and is sent to the hospital.
Danny Saunders goes to the hospital to apologize to Reuven. They become friends. After Reuven leaves the hospital he begins to see Danny Regularly despite their many differences. At this point Reuven's glasses are shattered and his vision is impaired. As Danny presents new ideas to Reuven he acts as glasses to the world Reuven has never seen. (symbolism)
Reuven learns the difficult life of Danny of rigorous studying and the painful silence between Danny and his father. Reb Saunders then talks to Reuven in a uncomfortable conversation. David Saunders then tells Rueven that it is not good to be a buffer. This foreshadows Rueven becoming a buffer for Reb Saunders and Danny. (foreshadowing)
After David Malter begins to attempt to make jewish homeland in Palenstine Reb Saunders is infuriated and explodes. (hyperbole) Reb Saunders does not allow Danny to see Reuven. This continues for 2 years.
