Elizabeth Griscom or "Betsy" Ross
In her upholstery shop, she fell in love with John Ross, another apprentice. Although he wasn't a Quaker, she married him in November of 1773. She was cut from her family and meeting house when her parents heard about it. The Griscoms also disowned her. Regardless of the consequences, John and Betsy secretly rowed across the Delaware River in November of 1773, to get married in New Jersey.
