  • BRAIDWOOD ACADEMY
  • Mr. Thomas Gallaudet came to America to teach minstry, when he came across Alice Cogswell, a deaf girl. He taught Alice a word and had the idea to teach deaf people ministry. So he asked Alice's father, Mason Cogswell, if he would pay his trip to England.
  • Gallaudet and Clerc meet
  • Gallaudet learned about a school called Braidwood academy and became very excited to learn all the new things and spread his ministry to even more people.
  • On the way to America
  • When Gallaudet came to Braidwood academy, he was not satisfied with what he found out. The administrative told him that whatever they teach him must be kept a secret, he must stay five years in the school, and must pay a lot of money to be in the program.
  • American School for the Deaf
  • Gallaudet traveled to Paris, France, seeing a flyer offering deaf student programs by a teacher who teaches outside, rather than having a classroom. He was very happy with what he saw, and asked the teacher, Sicard, to teach him Sign Language.
  • Clerc and Gallaudet "swapped" languages. Gallaudet taught Clerc how to read and write in English, and Clerc taught Gallaudet how to sign FSL.
  • Gallaudet, Clerc, and Mr. Cogswell all created and founded a school called the "American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb", in Hartford, Conneticut, in 1817. Eventually the name of the school was changed into the American School for the Deaf. Alice Cogswell was one of the first seven students to sttend this school and Clerc was the first deaf teacher to teach in this school.
