I'm not afraid of Athene because I AM better than Athene
The pride of Athene and Arachne's pride has effected the lives of them both because Arachne thinks she is better that Athene.
I, goddess of craftsman, challenges you to a weaving contest to see who is best.
Arachne was a great weaver and is known throughout the village. Athene heard of this and went down as an old woman to warn her about the consequences of equaling a god. But Arachne's boast stands and does not back down from the challenge.
Paragraph 2 Evidence
HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE HIGhER-UPS! YOU SHALL BE PUNISHED!
Arachne said, "...You would not speak to me, Arachne, of equaling work of Athene, EXCELLING is the better word." and that she "...don't fear Athene, I am not just boasting...Well do I know who will be victor." Shows that she has too much confidence in herself.
As the old woman, Athene was offended that Arachne thinks that she is better than her. So Athene throws off her disguise and challenges Arachne to a weaving contest.
Well, I know who will win and that would be ME.
"The grey-eyes of Athene the goddess, grew dark as the sea when a thunder cloud hung over it..." as Arachne started to boast.
Arachne's pride affected her life, as it insulted the goddess Athene.
