  • "Blighted in the eyes of God" - King Henry VIII

  • I wish to divorce my wife.
  • Due to the Catholic Religion, I can not allow this!
  • I must divorce Catherine without the Church's permission. In order to gain a male heir and to marry Anne Boleyn.
  • 1533
  • During 1509, King Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon in order to solidify an alliance with Spain. Although, in 1516 the Queen produced a female heir. King Henry was in need of a male heir to continue his bloodline and take his throne. Unfortunately, Catherine had several miscarriages and stillborns leading Henry to believe she was incapable of a male offspring. "If a man shall take his brothers wife it is an unclean thing... they shall be childless." (Leviticus xx,21)
  • 1533
  • During 1533, King Henry decided to divorce his wife because she could not produce a male heir. He wished to marry his mistress Anne Boleyn in the hope she would produce a male heir. The Roman Catholic Church held power over England, forcing Henry to request a divorce from the Pope because the church and England were allied. The Pope refused his requests, claiming it was against the Catholic religion.
  • 1538 - Official Excommunication

  • During 1533, King Henry Divorced Catherine of Aragon without the Pope’s permission. Henry risked the path of the Roman Catholic Church in order to marry Anne Boyle who was pregnant with his offspring. King Henry VIII hoped the offspring was a male in order to supply him with a male heir. King Henry was under the impression she could because she was not “blighted in the eyes of God.”

  • My new Religion; "The Church of England." I am now the supreme head and can govern my own religion.
  • During 1533, King Henry and Anne Boleyn were married in secret against the will of the Church. Due to Anne Boleyn’s pregnancy King Henry VIII had no choice in his disloyalty to the Church because he was in need of this heir to continue his reign.
  • During 1538, King Henry VIII was officially excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. Although, Henry was re-married in 1533 and created his own church “The Church of England” in 1534. The excommunication took 4 years to officially occur.
  • King Henry formed the Church of England in 1534. Declaring himself the supreme head due to the “act of Supremacy.” Henry’s government passed 132 laws in 7 years, declaring that the Roman Catholic Church was no longer in control of England. Between 1536 and 1540 Henry ordered all Catholic ministries to be destroyed and all Monks who spoke against him to be beheaded. The Church of England was latter known as the Anglican Church. “Anglican” meaning “from England”.
