In this scene Ferdinand asks his king, Manuel I of Portugal, for permission to go off on his quest to the New World. In this scene king Manuel I turns him down.
He went on to ask another king, Charles I of Spain, who in desperate need of a new route to the spice lands sponsored his voyage. Ferdinand became known as a traitor to his country and was even persecuted by his people under the orders of his king.
In this next scene, Ferdinand sets out on his voyage where he makes a couple of stops before his death.
Before that, he loses most of his fleet on their way. Many died on this voyage and he no longer had 5 ships by the time they left the Philippians.
Magellan died during his voyage along with a couple more of his men in the Philippians, they were killed by the Filipinos during their attempt to take over. Though the rest continued their voyage to the Spice lands.
After this they returned to Spain without their captain. They had completed the first voyage around the world and brought many spices to the king of Spain.
