  • The tone portrayed is empowered, optimistic, and confident because he acts as if he owns the world and he runs everything.

  • The black with his woolly head, the felon, the diseas'd, are not denied.
  • The writer of the poem uses the phrases like "whimper no more", "need nothing", " and "postpone no more" to show that the narrator is going though some changes in his life.
  • Theme
  • Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, Healthy, free, the world before me, The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose
  • The authors word choice helps put a picture in the head of the reader of what the narrator is seeing through or his thoughts. 
  • You rows of houses, you porches and entrances, you doors and ascending steps!
  • The author's word structure shows the reader the narrator is illiterate and not too smart because the author substitutes the suffix "ed"with " 'd"
  • The theme of "Song of the Open Road" is freedom lies ahead of the open road. You can go forward or backward. The choice is yours.
