Storyboard Text

  • The 17th Amendment changed the way we elected our senators to office.
  • Previously, state legislatures chose who would represent the state in the Senate.
  • We, the state legislature, choose Benjamin Franklin to be our Senator.
  • Yay!
  • Now, Senators would be elected by popular vote of the people in that state.
  • Some people were upset because Senators were no longer working in the interest of the state.
  • Senators now represent the people instead of the state!
  • This makes me feel like our state isn't as powerful as it used to be!
  • The 17th Amendment, passed on April 8, 1913, also changed the term length for Senators.
  • I've been selected as Senator and I get to be here for 6 years!
  • Nope! The 17th Amendment changes the term length to only 2 years.
  • This is still the way we elect our Senators today!
  • Vote!
