While robbing the store Mr.nesbitt drew a gun, so one of the robbers wrestled him for it, ultimately causing the gun to fire killing Mr.Nesbitt. And then Steve and James King get accused of this crime so he has to go to court.
At the beginning of the trial the prosecutors attorney referred to Steve as a "Monster"!
When Steve first is in prison he is always afraid of the other inmate and is just terrified to be there because his well being is constantly threatened.
At the end of the book all the other criminals are caught and Steve returns to his home. The message of the story is to show how the American legal system functions and shows the point of view of a African American teenager about the American legal system.
