Salva is dependent in the beginning of the novel because he has depended on adults to take care of him ever since he was born. In the morning when his tribe left him, he felt very scared and upset.
In the middle of the story, Salve felt bolder. He felt this way because his uncle got shot and killed by 3 Nuer men. He felt sad but then he felt stronger than ever before.
In the end, Salva felt very lucky. He felt this way because he made it across the river while Nuer men were shooting at him and alligators attacking him. He made it across, while most of the other men and boys didn't. He was one of the lucky ones that survived.
