Celie is the narrator and the protagonist of The Color Purple. Celie is an uneducated and poor black woman who had been raped and abused by her step father through her childhood, and by her husband as she grew older. When Celie was an adult she met a friend who helped her find her confidence at the end of the novel. Mr. (Albert) is Celie's husband who abused her for years and continued to knock her independence and confidence. He hides Nettie's letters from Celie for many of years. Sophia is Harpo's wife who becomes friends with Celie. Sophia is a big woman who refuses to bow down to anyone who tries to take advantage of her, especially the white man. She soongets sent to jail then becomes a maid for disobeying the mayor. Sophia's journey demonstrates the difficulties of fighting racism.
