When Tom goes to get gas from Wilson, WIlson mentions that he and Myrtle will be going away. Tom realizes that he will be losing control over that part of his life. A part of him does no want oto lose Myrtle, and the other part is realizing that he is losing control over Daisy. Tom's life relies on control, he reqalizes that he has to regain control.
When Gatsby meets Daisy for the first time in 5 years, he is very nervous and anxious. He keeps trying to recreate the past and stop time, symbolizes by the clock. Gatsby knocking over the clock shows that time is trying to move on, but Gatsby won't let it , showing that he is against the time's nature.
Gatsby and Tom get into an argument when they visit the plaza. Tom is trying to reveal who Gatsby really is while Gatsby is trying to defend his identity. This is person versus person because they are going agains each other and both trying to get Daisy.
