After a long, tiring journey, Odysseus decides to sleep outside of the nearby city “[...]overcome with weariness and sleep”(line 2) (personification)
Meanwhile, Athena, who is a goddess of wisdom, courage, and justice, appears to Nausicaa inside of a dream. “Like a gust of wind, Athena slipped over to the young girl’s bedside, stood there above her head, and then spoke to her”( line 24-26) (Simile)
In this dream, Nausicaa is commanded to ask her father for a wagon and mules, and take her maids to the river in order to wash both her garments and those of her brothers, since she will be getting married soon and still needs to look her best.
After waking up, the young maiden did as she was told and proceeded to the river with only her maids, the wagon and mules, as well as the goods her mother have given her.
However, right before Nausicaa was intending on leaving, Athena thought of another plan. She woke up Odysseus with the cry of one of the maids losing a ball to the mighty force of the river.
Once awoken, Odysseus came out from the bushes unclothed to meet the fair maidens.
