  • The Tariff of 1828
  • Congress and I have decided to put a tariff upon imported goods
  • The North
  • Great! that will keep US money in the US
  • it will boost the Economy too
  • The South
  • We want to be able to nullify any laws we think are unconstitutional
  • The Tariff helps the north more than the south
  • abolish the tariff
  • In 1828 President Jackson put a high tariff in place so as to bolster the US economy
  • The Force Act
  • Then I quit
  • I declare the Force Act where the federal government can collect taxes with the US army
  • The North benefited the most from the tariff.
  • We nullify the force act
  • The south would only benefit in the long run so they thought that congress was biased towards the north
  • Fine then we shall come to a compromise, there will be a lower tariff
  • The South wanted to nullify the Tariff but Jackson didn't agree. When Jackson didn't agree with the south His VP resigned. Jackson passed the Force Acts which allowed him to collect taxes with the army
  • The South threatened to secede and they also nullified the force acts.
  • In the End Jackson came to a compromise and lowered the tariff. The south still wanted to abolish the Tariff but they settled down. However states rights became stronger because they had gotten away with it once before
