  • Alexis de Tocqueville, his motivations for coming to America, and what he accopmlished
  • He though that the stability brought by war was unique to America, but required a powerful centralized force to maintain.
  • There was a sense of homogeneity that was unparalleled that was a drawback to democracy and created a tyranny of the majority and caused people to value material needs
  • Religion, according to de Tocqueville, was one of the only unifying characteristics of the American democracy and distracted Americans from material needs. 
  • He compared the north and the south early on(in chapter 2) and said that the south was closest to an aristocracy and the one that he favored.
  • The north was the exactt opposite of the south and was very industrial and was a better example of people seeking material needs.
