A couple weeks after Nikolai got home, he woke up to find many railroads along the side of is town. He was so happy that he ran to tell his spy friends when he suddenly heard a gunshot.
I, Father Gapon, think that we should begin a peaceful petition.
He turned around and ran to where the sound came from, and there he saw Tsar Alexander II lying on the ground. He had been assassinated by a group who did not believe he was helping the country.
Everyone was so devastated. Russia immediately elected Alexander III, a new and reactionary tsar. The people were scared that modernization would stop, but Sergei Witte came to the rescue. He made Russia a modern, industrialized country by inviting Westerners.
Th tsar has decided to create a Duma and finally give us our rights!
Years went by, and Nikolai grew older. A new leader was in place, Nicholas II. Tsar Nicholas was obsessed with expanding Russia, which led to problems at home. Many families, including Nikolai's family, could not stand the new reforms, so they attempted a peaceful protest to present a petition led by Father Gapon.
However, the protest was not very peaceful. Russian troops opened fire and killed many civilians. Nikolai's family died, but he lived to tell the tale. Later this event, Bloody Sunday, caused many Russians to hate the tsar.
A young but mighty Nikolai decided it was time for change, so he led a revolution during the summer of 1902. He and his friends conducted many political rallies and did not stop until the tsar issued the October Manifesto, which granted full civil rights and created a parliament called a Duma.
