On the landmass of Westeros there are 7 kingdoms, with the Iron Throne in Kings Landing ruling over them all. At the start of the story the previous Hand to the King (adviser) has just been murdered and the king, Robert Baratheon seeks a new one, in his best friend Eddard, aka Ned Stark of Winterfell.
Once King Robert makes it to Winterfell he offers the title of Hand at once to Ned, and also the marriage of Robert's oldest son and "heir" to the throne, Jofferey to Ned's oldest daughter Sansa.
Meanwhile on the other side of the Narrow Sea in Easteros Daenerys Targaryen, daughter of the old king Aerys II who was defeated in King Robert's rebellion, thus why she is in Easteros to escape being killed by him. Is haveing an arranged marriage as well set up by her brother Viserys, to a great Dothraki warrior Khal Droggo with the promise that if she behaves he will get Droggo's army to take the throne back.
After an amount of events that would make this storyboard longer then the Great Wall of China, for example King Robert dies, Ned finds out the weird incest stuff happens with the Queen and her brother meaning Jofferey isn't true heir and Ned's second youngest son Bran is almost murdered. Ned is arrested for treason for voicing his opinion on jofferey's legitemacy he is beheaded by Jofferey to show just how powerful he is.
Ned's oldest son Robb, in reaction to his father's controversial death retaliates by going to war with the King along with the others who denounce Jofferey as their king. Robb scoring the biggest blow capturing the Queen's brother and Jofferey's true father Jaime Lannister.
The book ends with Jofferey on the Iron Throne, and 3 other people claiming to be king. With Daenarys hatching 3 dragons from wedding gift eggs, and Jon snow (a "bastard" son of Ned who joined the Night's Watch) going beyond the fabled wall to fight the Wildlings and the Others.
