  • The Great Emperor of Mongolia notifies the King of Japan that history shows that a small country is to be dependent on a larger one
  • The Mongols sent a message to the Japanese. Some people advised the Emperor to submit but the shogun Shikken Tokimune declaring that the letter from the Mongols was offensive and that they were prepared to fight.
  • The leader of the Mongols, Kublai Khan, ordered the construction of a fleet of ships on the shores of Korea to invade Japan. The First Mongol Invasion left Korea in October 1274. The Mongol troops numbered anywhere between 23,000-40,00 and ships between 700-900.
  • The Mongols defeated the Japanese on both Tsushima and Iki island.
  • The main encounter occurred along the Chikuzen coast.The news of the previous battles had reached Japanese leadership and they fortified the coast with 10,000 samurai. The Mongols were prepared to meetwhat they had met on the previous islands: surprised and unprepared soldiers.
  • The Battle of Hakata Bay took place over several days, the fighting happening both on land and in the water.
  • On the fourth day, the Mongols took their ships further out to sea at night,fearing the Japanese would attack them at night . The Japanese managed to fight despite this by send out small ships holding a dozen warriors each
