Elie, who is the main character and narrator of Night and his father, Shlomo along with Elie's siblings are in Sighet, Transylvania. While in Sighet, Elie becomes interested in religious mysticism and meets Moshe the Beadle. Moshe lends him advice about his faith and tells him that God will answer you, but you may not feel or understand it immediately.
Many Jews are deported by process of trucks. because of the prosecution of Jews inhibited by the Nazis. During this process the Jews begin to wonder if WWII is moving closer or further away from them and Moshe escapes from the camp to deliver the news. Everyone looks at him like he is an idiot and a lunatic because no ones believes this danger could be hitting Sighet.
All of the Jews arrive at the camp and they are put into ghettos. Not long after, they find out about Auschwitz and that they are getting transferred there by a cattle car, but first they are going to Birkneau. While in the cattle car, a lady named Ms. Schacter screamed that she saw fire constantly while in the car.
After getting off the cattle cars, they are now at Auschwitz which is their new home. This is where Elie loses his faith in God because he believes that God should not have put him through this misery. He begins to leave himself out of the prayer groups when everyone else is praying because of him questioning there being a God.
The marching has begun where they had to run non stop for miles and miles without stopping and they got punished for not keeping up with the crowd. Elie's father was not very good with marching, so Elie decided to help him out. A few days later after the march Elie's father begins to get weaker and weaker and began to lose everything.
