On June 1789, the Third Estate declared itself to be the National Assembly. Tennis Court was where the Assembly took place which was the Tennis Court. In the oath, they promised to not disband until they created a new national constitution.

On the morning of July 14, 1789, the revolutionaries approached the Bastille. They demanded that the military leader of the Bastille, Governor de Launay, to surrender the prison and hand over the gunpowder. He refused. The Bastille was rumored to be full of political prisoners and was a symbol of many of the oppression of the king. It also had stores of gunpowder that the revolutionaries needed for their weapons.
