  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  • Missouri shouldn't be a  slave state!
  • Too bad! It's their choice!
  • Northern Free States: Beliefs about Congressional Powers
  • Congress is the all power! States should be listening to them!
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • Both sides should have an equal number of states!Make it balanced!
  • The North opposed the compromise because it added Missouri as a slave state therefore threatening the equal balance between free states and slave states
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • The addition of Missouri will get us more votes, therefore giving us an edge to votes!
  • The North believed in congressional powers and believed that states should be following the laws. The North also believe that federal authority was the highest and states shouldn't be able to nullify laws.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
  • If it's unconstitutional, then we have the right to not obey it!
  • The North feared that the unbalance number of states would give the south a winning edge during votes and make them more powerful.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • If we get new states and they decide to become free then it'll become unbalanced!
  • The South supported the compromise because it let Missouri become a state therefore helping the south get more votes.
  • The South believed that States had the right to not obey a law if felt unconstitutional or if it was unfair. The South had a very strong belief in States' rights and an example of that would be when they threatened to separate from the U.S. when California didn't want to be a slave state.
  • The South feared that the compromise would give the North an advantage since every state above the 36'30 would be a non slavery state and it never stated that anything under the line would become a slave state.
