  • Immediate causes of the War in 1812 were a series of economic sanctions taken by the British and French against the US as part of the Napoleonic Wars.  
  • 1814-White House is burning
  • The US declared war on Britain in 1812 due to the Britain refusing to stop capturing American ships that traded with France. They also took our sailors.
  • Dolly flees the white house grounds
  • England and the United States grow further apart over time.
  • Key negotiates for friend being held captive by British

  • British troops enter Washington,D.C. and burn the white house in retaliation for the American attack on the city of York in Ontario, Canada, in June 1812. Soldiers reportedly sat down for a meal made of leftovers before ransacking the presidential mansion and setting it ablaze.
  • Dolly Madison fled the white house with the full length portrait of president Washington and two unnamed men. 
  • Key goes to Baltimore to negotiate the release of William Beanes. However they weren't allowed to leave until after the bombardment of Fort McHenry.
