Storyboard Text

  • Teddy Roosevelt had a debate over the location of the proposed canal, on June 19, 1902, with the US Senate John Jay and over 6 months they agreed with Panama.
  • Before the canal was built, ships had to make a long voyage around the tip of South America.  The U.S. needed to get permission to build the canal.
  • Panama was owned by Colombia so Roosevelt disagreed with Colombia's financial terms.
  • Roosevelt then sent down warships to panama in order to free their independence for Colombia.
  • After Panama was declared independent, Roosevelt spent $375 million to build the Panama Canal plus 10 million for a 10 mile wide strip.
  • Completed in 1914, the Panama Canal symbolized U.S. technological prowess and economic power till this day.
