Storyboard Text

  • This grass is gonna be an awesome lunch!
  • Sorry, but you're going to be our dinner guys.
  • Hehe! They don't even suspect us!
  • This is a nice ecosystem with plenty of grass for the animal to eat. It is a perfect example of a food web and how energy moves through the ecosystem.
  • You're dead meat.
  • ??
  • The grasses are the producers. They are the organisms that start the energy flow. They use about 90% of the energy, and store only 1/10. After eating the grass, these insects (not necessarily bees) will get that 10% of energy from the plant. The insects are the primary consumers, or the first level of consumers in the ecosystem.
  • This grass tastes awesome!!!
  • Totally agreed!
  • Here, the mice and shrews are going to eat the insects. They are the secondary consumers, because they are the second level of consumers. The insects also use 90% of the energy and store 10%. So the mice only get the 10% (or 1% from the plants).
  • I'm done for. Goodbye, cruel world.
  • Yes. To be exact, the one who is going to eat you.
  • The snake here is the top predator, or the tertiary consumer. The mice use 90% of the energy they got from the insects, so the snake only gets 10%, or 0.1% of the original energy from the plants.
  • Coming back to the other side of the food web, the sheep and the rabbit are also primary consumers and get 10% of the energy produced by the grass, since grass uses 90% and stores only 10%.
  • Here, the tiger is the top predator and he eats the rabbit. This time, there is no secondary consumer and the tiger already is the tertiary consumer. He gets 10% of what energy the rabbit got from the grass.
  • Is the animal behind me who I think he is?
